Golf Courses on Oahu
Oahu is a golfer’s paradise. Where else can you tee off surrounded by tropical jungle, with cloud-draped mountains towering above you and whales breaching in the distance? (Well okay, other than Kauai, Maui and the Big Island). Oahu has more golf courses than any of the neighboring islands, most within a short drive from Waikiki. Here are five courses you have to try on your next visit to Paradise.
Ko Olina Golf Club
Ranked as one of Golf Digest’s top 75 resort courses in the U.S., Ko Olina Golf Club in Kapolei boasts an 18-hole course with multi-tiered greens, spectacular water features, and a moderate course length. The course is approximately a 45-minute drive from Espacio, the Jewel of Waikiki, and an hour from the Aqua Aloha Surf Waikiki. If you don't want to face Oahu traffic, don’t worry, catch Ko Olina's free shuttle service from Waikiki.
Turtle Bay Golf
The Turtle Bay Golf Course in Kahuku is on the north shore, an approximate hour and a 20-minute drive from Waikiki hotels such as the Aqua Aloha Surf. Why take such a long drive when other golf courses are much closer? The 18-hole Arnold Palmer Course runs along acres of north shore coastline, offering amazing views (especially in the winter when north shore swells produce monster waves). Turtle Bay Gold also offers the George Fazio Course, which is a great golfing excursion for beginners and families.
Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
Tropical jungle surrounds the greens and fairways of the 18-hole, par 72 Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, located in Maunawili Valley between Mount Olomana and the Koolau Mountains. This scenic course is a 30-minute drive from Waikiki.
Ewa Beach Golf Club
Ewa Beach Golf Club isn’t as well-known as the Turtle Bay Golf Course and other Oahu courses, which is a shame, as the 18-hole championship golf course is a golfer’s delight. With the Waianae Mountain range in the background, you tee off over ancient Hawaiian fishing village remains and fairways populated with endangered native Hawaiian birds, including the ae’o, or Hawaiian stilt. Ewa Beach club is only a 30-minute drive from Ewa Hotel Waikiki.
Kahuku Golf Course
The Kahuku Golf Course is a no-frills seaside 9-hole, par 36 course on Oahu's north shore, approximately a 90-minute drive from from the Ilikai Hotel and other Waikiki resorts. The course can be challenging when the wind picks up, but the coastal views are amazing. Keep an eye out for whales during the winter months.
