Two Days in Upcountry Maui

Paia is your North Shore entry point to Upcountry. This radiant, upbeat town blends old-Hawaiian charm with free-spirited flavor. Begin your day with a delicious breakfast crepe at Cafe Des Amis.

Paia’s diverse array of shops are why people call it “shopper’s paradise.” Go holoholo (out for the fun) and check out them out. Make sure you stop by Alice in Hulaland for local crafts, clothing, and jewelry.

Go. Even if there’s a line out the door (which there often is), it moves fast and will give you enough time to decide what you want from the best lunch spot in Paia. Enjoy a delicious seafood plate, yummy fish tacos, or a juicy burger with correctly-crispy fries. Every dish is its own destination.

Go see the masterful works of art on display in this beloved arts center. Learn about the artists featured in their monthly exhibitions, then pick up a handcrafted masterpiece from one of over 90 local artists and vendors who sell their creations at the Gallery Shop.

After lunch, head 15 minutes upland to this charming community with a thriving arts scene. Wander into a cafe for an afternoon snack, and search for the perfect souvenir as you walk through the boutiques on Baldwin Avenue.

Spend the morning on a self-guided tour of Hawaii’s favorite botanical garden. The garden is home to a dazzling (and romantic) collection of Hawaiian flora, exotic and endangered birds, and immaculate landscape architecture. Shop 100% locally-made items in the garden’s gift shop.

Feast your eyes, nose, and mouth on Alii Kula Lavender as you tour this scenic farm. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch made just for you, as you surround yourself with the sights and scents of a light-purple sanctuary. A lavender-infused dessert comes with every meal.

Pineapple wine anyone? Try it along with the Estate and Rose Ranch wines from MauiWine (Maui’s only winery). This elegant countryside vineyard is open every day from 10:00-5:30, with multiple tastings happening each afternoon.

Bring your tour to an end by gazing out into the stars from the Puu Ulaula Overlook in Haleakala National Park. It’s always open. If you opt for an early dinner, you can head out on a stargazing tour with Maui Stargazing (beginning about 2 hours before sunset).
